Spurs Should Pair Victor Wembanyama with Point Guard Prospect from 2024 NBA Draft
Despite rookie Victor Wembanyama’s clear success so far this season, the Spurs still have plenty of work to do on the NBA Draft front in order to get back to contention.
And that will start with finding a point guard prospect to learn and grow alongside Wembanyama for the foreseeable future.
Luckily for San Antonio, with the current trajectory they’re on, there’s a myriad of point guard prospects that should be in their range on draft night 2024.
The first and most talked about regarding the Spurs will likely be Serbian guard Nikola Topic, who has skyrocketed up boards in this cycle with gaudy numbers.
NBA Draft Scouting Report: Serbia's Nikola Topic
Aside from averaging 18.6 points, 6.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 52% in one of the best leagues in the world, Topic would be a dream fit next to the 7-foot-4 phenom already in San Antonio.
He has a strong handle, adept passing chops and expert-level pick-and-roll navigation that would make his fit with Wemby a strong one.
Other options near the top of the draft would be Isaiah Collier, a bulky offensive dynamo making his name for the USC Trojans currently, and do-it-all combo guard Stephon Castle.
Collier has a ways to go in terms of overall development, but he’s been unable to hide the potential star-power bubbling under the surface. Castle might not be looked at as a pure point guard for the time being, but there’s no denying his potential as a jumbo ball-handler.
No matter who the Spurs choose on draft night, coming away with a prospect that will orbit their sun that is Wembanyama for the next decade will be pivotal.
