Three Sleeper 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year Candidates

Which non-lottery NBA rookies have an outside chance of inserting themself into the NBA Rookie of the Year conversation?

By now, we all know the names of those players who are set to contend for and likely come away with the 2023-24 NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

Victor Wembanyama, Scoot Henderson, even the second overall draftee in 2022 in Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren.

But who are players set to push through and potentially contend for it despite having the odds, very much, stacked against them?

Jaime Jaquez Jr., Heat

After yet another strong showing at UCLA, Jaquez blossomed to the No. 18 pick overall, and for good reason.

By the time it’s all said and done, Jaquez likely won’t see his name next to the Wembanyama’s of the world. But his year one in the NBA may be the perfect recipe for success.

At 22, he’ll have a decent bit of experience on the younger players coming into the league. Miami has a history of quickly melding its players in and helping them to succeed. And even more, the team lost some production that he can likely fill from both an offensive and defensive perspective.

Keyonte George, Jazz

After slipping some in the draft, George let everyone know his thoughts at 2023 NBA Summer League, where he went scorched earth on the offensive end.

Those who watched his time at Baylor closely knew he had the capability, and that’s exactly what makes him a dark horse candidate for the upcoming Rookie of the Year Award.

In reality, George likely won’t be given the leash necessary to put up big scoring stats. But if at any point Utah opts for a more development-driven season with the likes of George, Walker Kessler, Taylor Hendricks, Ochai Agbaji and Brice Sensabaugh getting big minutes, watch out.

Kris Murray, Trail Blazers

There’s no question Murray’s teammate, Scoot Henderson, is set to contend for the Rookie of the Year Award. But Murray may very well have a better chance than people think.

If Portland can offload superstar Damian Lillard in time to take a youthful approach to the season, Murray could very well see success via his length, shooting and all-around game.

I wouldn’t be running to the bank on this one, but watch out for Murray to make a big NBA impact early and often, similarly to his brother.
