Victor Wembanyama Dons Spurs Jersey for First Time
Victor Wembanyama has been the top prospect in the basketball world for some time now. But at Thursday’s draft, he officially became an NBA player.
After the Spurs won the lottery back in May, it was a forgone conclusion the French phenom and longtime San Antonio fan would be selected first overall. From there, it was a long wait for fans.
On Saturday, Spurs fans got their first look at Wembanyama in the black and silver as he got shots up from AT&T Center wearing No. 1.
The hype behind Wembanyama is real.
At 7-foot-4 with premier shot-blocking and perimeter ability, Wembanyama led the Metropolitans of the LNB Pro A league to the finals, eventually losing to Monaco in the best-of-five series.
On the season, Wembanyama averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.4 assists while shooting 47 percent from the field, 28 percent from three and 83 percent from the line. He played in 34 games.
Now, basketball fans around the world will wait to see him don the jersey in action. Both Wembayama and Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich have said he will play this summer, although it’s not clear how many games he’ll play, be it Sacramento or Las Vegas.
The 2023 NBA Summer League runs from July 7 through July 17. Each team will play at least five games in Las Vegas.
