Victor Wembanyama Still Committed to France for 2024 Olympics
Victor Wembanyama, the top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, restated his commitment to the French national team on Friday.
After missing out on FIBA World Cup action, the heralded 7-foot-4 center plans to give it a go with France in the 2024 Olympics.
"Performing well at the Olympics would be a great story," Wembanyama told French media. "I'll be present at the Olympics, and there's no other goal than gold."
France didn’t perform well in FIBA, but with Wembanyama at the helm, they could fare better in 2024.
Most simply, Wembanyama was one of the most heralded basketball prospects since LeBron James. With innate height, length and athleticism, as well as a modern basketball infusion with a perimeter-oriented game. All 14 NBA lottery teams wanted to hear their name called last in order to land his talents on draft night.
With the Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A league, Wembanyama averaged 21.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists and a league-high 3.0 blocks per game en route to a finals appearance.
In Summer League, Wembanyama saw up and down performances. In his final appearance, he tacked on 27 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
Wembanayama is a clear favorite to take home the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year Award, and soon should have the Spurs back on track to title contention in the coming years.
Wembanyama and the Spurs will open up their preseason slate with a matchup against Chet Holmgren and the Oklahoma City Thunder at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9, 2023.
