Villanova’s Cam Whitmore Has Wide Range in 2023 NBA Draft
Villanova wing Cam Whitmore is one of the more intriguing prospects in the 2023 NBA Draft.
With innate athleticism and sky-high scoring potential coupled with a shaky handle and some defensive worries, Whitmore’s range could range anywhere from the fifth overall pick to the back half of the lottery.
Draft Digest’s Derek Parker broke down Whitmore in his Heat Check series on YouTube below:
Ultimately, there are a few good landing spots for Whitmore. The Pistons at No. 5 make some sense. A Pacers swing at seventh would be warranted and a swing for either Washington or Utah has merit.
In Detroit, Whitmore would have multiple passer/playmakers to play off of in Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey, both of which would be constantly looking to get him involved as a lob-threat, cutter or even shooter.
Indiana is a similar scenario with one of the better passers in the league in Tyrese Haliburton, but offers up even more on-ball reps with co-stars Bennedict Mathurin and others not necessarily needing the ball to thrive.
For Washington and Utah, Whitmore could be a sound upside swing in hopes he blossoms into his full potential as a hyper-athletic wing scorer. Both the Wizards and Jazz are at risk of sitting in NBA purgatory, and banking on Whitmore’s upside could be the key to propelling them into new eras.
Regardless, Whitmore’s NBA fit will be an interesting one.
