Wemby Watch: Block Party Continues

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama continues to be the league's best rim protector.

With just over a month remaining in the NBA's regular season, this rookie class has the opportunity to close out what's been a phenomenal collective performance thus far. This is a spectacular class that has both elite talent at the top and depth throughout.

The best player in this group of rookies is Victor Wembanyama, who is already one of the faces of the league with the San Antonio Spurs. While this was an up-and-down week for the first-year talent, he was still incredibly impressive.

What has the generational talent done since our last Wemby Watch update, and what are his statistics to this point?

2023-24 Stats: 20.7 PPG | 10.3 RPG | 3.4 BPG | 1.3 SPG | 3.4 APG | 46.9% FG | 33.5% 3PT

Spurs Record: 13-49

Over the course of the past three games, Wembanyama has produced a ridiculous 18 total blocks. While he did struggle with his individual matchup against Alperen Sengun in a recent game against the Houston Rockets, the Spurs rookie still blocked seven shots in that contest alone. Wembanyama's defense upside hasn't gone unnoticed, as he's currently second when it comes to odds for NBA Defensive Player of the Year. This would be a rare accomplishment considering he's a rookie, but he would be deserving.

Speaking of awards, Wembanyama essentially solidified the Rookie of the Year nod in a game against Chet Holmgren and the Oklahoma City Thunder this week, as he dominated the game to pull the Spurs to a victory. While Holmgren played great, Wembanyama was clearly the best rookie and changed the game on both ends.

In the upcoming week, Wembanyama and the Spurs will take on the Sacramento Kings, followed by the Golden State Warriors twice and then the Houston Rockets.
