Wemby Watch: Notching A Triple-Double
The San Antonio Spurs continue to struggle as it relates to the win column, but Victor Wembanayama remains a generational talent. He's been nothing but spectacular as a rookie and is only getting better.
What's been most impressive of late is his ability to score 20 points regularly, while also doing so more efficiently. He entered the league as a fantastic defender, but is also starting to become an effective three-level scorer on the offensive end. Not only that, but his vision at 7-foot-4 is special.
What has the generational talent done since our last Wemby Watch update, and what are his statistics to this point?
2023-24 Stats: 19.2 PPG | 10.2 RPG | 3.2 BPG | 1.2 SPG | 3.1 APG | 44.7% FG | 28.8% 3PT
Spurs Record: 6-30
Wembanyama has now scored at least 20 points in six consecutive contests. As such, he continues to work his way towards averaging 20 points per game on the season despite just recently turning 20 years old.
With that in mind, scoring is just scratching the surface of what he's done well of late. In fact, he had the best game of his young NBA career on Wednesday night against the Detroit Pistons.
In a convincing win, Wembanyama notched a triple-double in just 21 minutes of action. This made him just the second player (Russell Westbrook) in the last 40 years to accomplish this in under 22 minutes. The French rookie got to work early in the blowout win, finishing with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. To make it even more impressive, he didn't commit a single turnover.
With each passing week, Wembanyama accomplishes something new that is impressive for a player of his age. With how good he already is, it will be scary for opposing teams to see what he looks like a year or two from now.
In the upcoming week, Wembanyama and the Spurs will take on the Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Atlanta Hawks and Boston Celtics.
