Wemby Watch: Struggling with the Perimeter Shot
There's less than a month remaining in the NBA's regular season, which means Victor Wembanyama's rookie campaign is coming to an end. He's been remarkable to this point, proving to already be one of the better players in the entire league.
There have certainly been ups and downs throughout his first season, but overall it has been more than successful. He came in with extremely high expectations, but has lived up to the hype.
What has the generational talent done since our last Wemby Watch update, and what are his statistics to this point?
2023-24 Stats: 20.7 PPG | 10.4 RPG | 3.5 APG | 3.5 BPG | 1.3 SPG | 46.4% FG | 32.3% 3PT
Spurs Record: 15-54
In the three games Wembanyama played over the past week, he converted on just two of his 16 attempts from beyond the arc. While he's improved as a perimeter shooter over the course of his rookie season, this has been a rough stretch, especially given he's taking more than five attempts per game. Luckily for the Spurs, Wembanyama does everything on the court, so even when the shot isn't falling, he's still impacting winning. He's pulled down 35 boards and has blocked 12 shots in his past three games while also being a plus-seven on the week when combining box scores.
There have been plenty of tall players who have come through the NBA in history, but none have been as skilled as Wembanyama. The combination of size, length and skill allows him to do things that quite literally no other player in the history of the league can. It seems every single night he has at least one possession that highlights this ability, proving to be a generational talent with a limitless ceiling.
In the upcoming week, Wembanyama and the Spurs will take on the Memphis Grizzlies, the Phoenix Suns twice, followed by the Utah Jazz.
