Prospect Profile

An extremely athletic power forward with the physical profile and athleticism to dominate at the next level one day, Newell has the makings of a high-impact NBA player. Although his body is still developing, the Georgia prospect is extremely quick and fluid for his height at 6-foot-10. His length and speed combination is special for a player of his age.

To become the ideal modern forward, Newell’s offensive game needs to continue to expand. As good as he is in the paint when leveraging his size, he needs to get better as a jump shooter. The lefty is much improved on that front but will need to extend range at the next level and knock down shots with less space. As of today, he’s more of just a catch-and-shoot guy.

Newell also needs to improve his right hand as a driver and finisher to round out his scoring upside. He’s also a great lob threat and a weapon in transition which should translate well at the next level as the game speeds up. Especially on the offensive end, Newell is a quality rebounder who generates second-chance points for himself and his teammates.

Defensively, Newell is a good rim protector but struggles some with physicality and contact given his slender frame. If he can get stronger, he will really have a ton of upside on that end. The Georgia freshman isn’t the most effective against bigger, more physically dominant frontcourt players which is one downfall of him as a defensive prospect today. Regardless, it’s easy to buy his long-term upside with the physical tools and skillset he has.

The former five-star recruit was part of Montverde’s loaded roster in which he played alongside Duke’s Cooper Flagg and several other future NBA talents. As one of the most talented freshmen in the SEC this season, Newell has one-and-done potential.
