Prospect Profile

Although an undersized guard for NBA standards, Shead plays much bigger than himself and has a chip on his shoulder. He has fantastic two-way upside and brings the energy every time he plays. There’s no question he will be able to elevate a team at the next level.

The Cougar averaged 13 points, 3.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.2 steals per game while shooting 40 percent from the floor, 30 percent from beyond the arc and 78 percent at the charity stripe. The nearly 22-year-old is lethal as a pick-and-roll ball handler and can make any pass and advanced reads while scoring at the rim and off pull-up jumpers at a 36 percent clip.

His efficiency at 41.2% from the field in as large of a role as he assumed for the Cougars could translate to the league if he is able to pick his shots as intelligently as in college, though it'd come in a much smaller scale. He's also proven his ability to playmake as a lead guard, able to navigate through the lane and find cutters, open shooters on the kickout, and much more. Despite his slight shooting deficiency and lack of length, his offense isn't a crash course waiting to happen.

While Shead has to figure out a way to shoot the ball efficiently - especially off the catch where he turned in just a 30 percent clip in such scenarios. While the first thing an NBA staff would need to do is figure out a way to tap into Shead's shooting potential, the four-year college star has the defense and table setting to really help a team's rotation, especially adding cheap depth to make it through an 82-game season.

Especially since the defensive upside a team would get with Shead is palpable. A full 94-feet gritty defender, being coached by Kelvin Sampson only fortified his tenacity and motor on that end. His physicality, size and center of gravity as an on-ball defender is something that shouldn't let him slip too late into the second round. Defensively, no one will outwork the guard who is willing to get physical, jump passing lanes and create deflections and stops for his team. He is fantastic at the point of attack, is disruptive and overall elevates his team’s defensive efficiency.

One thing about Jamal Shead is that, to use an old cliche, he “plays bigger than he is.” This doesn’t just apply to defense, but also to rebounding, as he battled on the glass throughout the game as well. Obviously his size will prevent him from ever being elite on the boards, but the motor is real.

The primary problem with Shead is that he’s already in the minority of draft prospects who are undersized guards who aren’t also elite shooters, leaving Shead a very thin margin for error in his time on the floor. As much as Shead does on the defensive end and in distribution, his swing skill is going to have to be his 3-point shot.

Regardless, he is going to be a great pick for someone on draft night and is well worth a second-round selection.
