Prospect Profile

Now a member of the Indiana Hoosiers following a transfer, Rice was a standout freshman at Washington State last season. He missed two full seasons as he battled Hodgkin's lymphoma, but overcame it and had a phenomenal first season last year as a headliner for a 25-win WSU team. He started in every game and averaged nearly 15 points per contest.

Although he’s known for being a scorer, Rice is a natural lead guard and a good passer. He’s great in running offense through pick-and-roll sets, but needs to prove he can also be effective off-ball in the upcoming season. Perimeter shooting will be the swing skill for Rice. He shot quite a few triples, but didn’t convert at a high rate. His mechanics appear to be sound and he’s a great free throw shooter, so there’s reason for optimism on that front.

On the defensive end, Rice generates a good number of steals but isn’t known for being a lockdown defender. He’s somewhat limited due to his height on who he can defend adequately, but he always gives energy and effort.

Following a freshman campaign that resulted in Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors and a spot on an All-Pac-12 team, we’ll now get to see how Rice’s game translates to the Big Ten style of play. He’s a former three-star recruit from the Class of 2021, so he’s a bit older for a sophomore following his battle with cancer that delayed his start to collegiate basketball by two years. Rice is an inspiring story and an awesome prospect who deserves all the praise.
