Prospect Profile

Gortman emerged as a legit NBA talent last season in the Overtime Elite system, leading YNG Dreamerz to the OTE Finals. During the regular season, he averaged nearly 14 points, five boards and four assists per contest.

He had one of the highest vertical jumps in the G League Elite Camp as he placed third in the maximum vertical jump. Gortman also measured extremely well and produced in the scrimmages, which resulted in him getting invited to the official combine shortly after. As such, his stock has absolutely risen in the pre-draft process.

The undersized guard is a good athlete with real burst, possessing a great motor and a high level of competitiveness. Gortman blends a dynamic handle with explosiveness and really has the ability to break down defenders. With that in mind, he needs to improve as a perimeter scorer, because as of today prefers driving to the rim. His jumper just needs to improve overall, although he did shoot 32.9% from deep on decent volume last season. That could be hard to replicate at NBA level, as the level of defense and difficulty of these shots will rapidly increase. On the flip side, he’s a good free throw shooter so at minimum he should be a translatable rhythm shooter.

Gortman can play at either guard spot with his upside to score but also facilitate. He has good vision, but can be turnover prone at times. He also needs to get stronger, especially to enhance his ability to score in traffic and defend. He was disruptive last season on defense and generated a high number of steals, but that was likely due to the nature of the OTE play style.

He could definitely be a long-term project, but Gortman should get real consideration late in the second round. He’s performed well during the pre-draft process and has shown he has skills that translate from OTE to the NBA.
