Prospect Profile
Following three seasons at Princeton, Evbuomwan has made it clear he’s ready for the next step in his basketball journey. The British forward has been highly productive for quite some time now, but really got to showcase his skills on the big stage during Princeton’s recent Sweet 16 run.
Operating as what is essentially a point forward, Evbuomwan is one of the most underrated passers in this entire draft class. He generated more than 300 assists over the past two years alone as a frontcourt player. When the ball is in his hands, good things tend to happen. Evbuomwan has upside as a scorer but is also great at setting up his teammates orchestrating the offense. He led the Tigers in both points and assists last season.
The swing still for Evbuomwan, like many prospects, will be his jumper. While he did shoot 32.4% from deep as junior following an 11.8% outing as sophomore, he still has a long way to go. Was this recent season really a sign of growth, or was it a small sample outlier? Either way, he’s been a low volume 3-point shooter to this point. It’s also worth noting that Evbuomwan is a poor free throw shooter, which is something to consider when thinking about his future as a perimeter shooter.
Even without the jumper converting at a high rate, Evbuomwan can really be a catalyst for an NBA offense in the right situation. He can pull down rebounds and push the break, which is a valuable skill for modern forwards. Especially with teams looking for positional size and versatility, having a guy like Evbuomwan in the second unit as a plug-and-play option should be attractive.
On the defensive end, Evbuomwan isn’t known for being elite, but has adequate size and can hold his own. It will be interesting to see how he fares at the next level. He doesn’t have the lateral quickness to defend some wings, but also lacks the size to guard traditional bigs.
Evbuomwan has really improved his stock during the pre-draft process, putting together a quality performance at G League Elite Camp which resulted in an invite to the NBA Draft Combine. He’s a prospect that may not get drafted on June 22, but has a unique skilllset that will be valued on the undrafted free agent market if he doesn’t hear his name called.
