Grizzlies and Raptors Free Agents Expected to Team Up
It has been expected for a while that the Memphis Grizzlies would not be re-signing Dillon Brooks in free agency, but there now seems to be a clear favorite to sign him. In a recent report, NBA insider Marc Stein said that the Houston Rockets are expected to sign not only Brooks, but Toronto Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet as well.
VanVleet has been linked to Houston in multiple reports, but Stein seemed certain that both he and Brooks will team up in Houston, writing the following in his Substack report:
"It has reached the point when I speak to various teams that it would be a legitimate leaguewide surprise now if Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks don't strike verbal agreements to join the Houston Rockets by Friday night. VanVleet, as covered in this cyberspace Wednesday, is expected to receive a two-year offer from Houston worth a projected maximum of $83.6 million. Brooks has been regarded for days as an even likelier free agent to join the Rockets - also on a two-year deal in the $14-to-$16 million range annually."
The Rockets are one of the few teams in the NBA with cap space to sign free agents like Brooks and VanVleet, and it looks like they are attempting to transition away from their tanking era. While these aren't moves that will make Houston a contender, adding VanVleet and Brooks will make them more competitive, which is a step in the right direction.
