Atlanta Hawks Trade for Saddiq Bey Might Fall Apart
Thursday afternoon's trade between the Atlanta Hawks and the Detroit Pistons is at serious risk of falling apart. The deal that sent Pistons' forward Saddiq Bey to Atlanta for five future second-round draft picks was not a simple two-team transaction.
The trade required the Golden State Warriors to send center James Wiseman to Detroit for Bey and Kevin Knox. In turn, Atlanta sent five second-round picks to Golden State for Bey; Golden State sent Knox and the second-round picks to Portland for Gary Payton II.
However, last night the basketball world learned Payton has a core muscle injury that could sideline him for up to three months. Golden State must decide by today to consummate the deal or rescind the entire trade. Unfortunately, no amendments to the trade can be made after the passing of Thursday's trade deadline.
If the trade does not go through, it will deal a significant blow to Atlanta's only important move at the trade deadline. Bey, a former NBA All-Rookie player, is only 23 years old and offers size and shooting where Atlanta most needs it.
Bey was welcomed with a social media post celebrating his arrival in Atlanta. Not only would sending Bey back to Detroit hurt Atlanta's postseason outlook, but it would be very awkward for all parties involved. Stay locked into AllHawks.com for updates on this developing story.
Update
ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Golden State Warriors have until 9:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 12, to decide on Gary Payton II’s physical and the fate of a four-team.
Wojnarowski stated that Golden State might push into tomorrow to evaluate Payton's abdominal injury and make a choice. Golden State believes important information on Payton’s abdominal injury was withheld before Thursday's deadline deal. Golden State expects Payton to miss a significant part of the remaining regular season.
