NBA Insider: "I Think Trae Understands He Needs Quin to Win and Quin Understands You Need Trae If You Are Going to Win in Atlanta"
With the Atlanta Hawks in 10th place in the Eastern Conference (by only two games) and the fact that the Hawks did nothing at the trade deadline, there has been consistent speculation over the past month about whether the Hawks could look to trade Young in the offseason. All of that has been outside noise from other teams and rival executives, not from Atlanta or Young, but there is still speculation over what the Hawks might do with Young this offseason.
On the most recent episode of the 520 podcast, former Hawks point guard Jeff Teague and prominent NBA insider Shams Charania were discussing the Hawks's future and here is what Charania had to say about Young and the pairing with head coach Quin Snyder, including whether or not the Hawks might rebuild:
"If you are Quin... from everything I have hear, the Quin-Trae relationship has been very good. I think there is two things. 1) Trae knows that he needs Quin to win and 2) Quin knows that he needs Trae if you are going to try and win in Atlanta and that relationship has been good so what do you do if you are Atlanta?"
Teague had this to say:
"There is nobody on the market that can take Atlanta over the hump. You have to have a certain type of player that can play with Trae Young. You need a lob threat or you need to have a big that has the ability to stretch the floor and we have not been able to get that in Atlanta . I love our bigs, I love O (Onyeka Okongwu) and Jalen (Johnson). It is just not a great fit right now though."
There are some out there though that hope Trae finds his way out of Atlanta.
Former NBA center DeMarcus Cousins appeared with NBA commentator Rachel Nichols and had bold words to say about what Trae Young should want this summer and if we will ever see Young in a Hawks uniform again:
"I hope not. I hope this is the last time we see him in a Hawks uniform. I feel like his talent is being wasted, his prime is being wasted. Get healthy, get 100% correct whether that is in Atlanta or you know, fingers crossed, the San Antonio Spurs"
Trae Young Reacts to LeBron James Passing 40,000 Career Points: "It's Unreal"
Nichols and Cousins talked about the idea of Young being traded to the Spurs and pairing up with budding superstar Victor Wembanyama:
"It's a match made in heaven, it just makes sense. This Hawks team is not doing anything for his talent. I take it personal because I was in that situation once and hopefully this offseason, this is the season where he puts his foot down and uses his power and move to a situation that is going to be healthy for him."
There has been speculation from rival executives and people outside of Atlanta, but remember, none of this trade talk is coming from Young or the Hawks.
We'll see what transpires this summer.
