Anthony Edwards Draws Inspiration From Dwyane Wade As He Approaches Breakout Season
Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Anthony Edwards should continue taking inspiration from Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade’s playstyle. He is entering his fourth season in the league, aiming to make the jump to a superstar-caliber player.
Who better to model your game after than a shooting guard about to be inducted as a first-ballot Hall of Famer?
In February 2021, Edwards was interviewed after a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. He commented on how much pick-and-roll film he watches to prepare for games, for which he credited Wade.
"I watch Dwyane Wade a lot due to how I think Kobe [Bryant] once said he ‘disappears’ on his ball screens, so I watch him a lot to try to mimic what he does on the ball screen. So if they’re jumping out, I try to split screens as much as possible if they jump out. I just watch him a lot. That’s the only person I watch on ball screens because he’s dynamic, getting downhill, not settling, and he’s just one of the greatest shooting guards to ever play the game, and I feel like if I can mimic him, I can become the same, so I watch him a lot."
Edwards should continue molding his game around Wade because it has certainly proven effective so far. In each of his first three seasons, he has seen statistical improvement. Last season, he averaged 24.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.6 steals on 45.9 percent shooting.
Wade and Edwards also share similar playstyles, thriving when attacking the basket. Edwards clearly puts a lot of effort into his craft, following in the footsteps of an all-time great. Giving him all the pieces needed to have a breakout season.
