Chris Quinn Next In Line On Miami Heat Coaching Tree

Quinn likely to follow in footsteps of Erik Spoelstra, David Fizdale and Juwan Howard
In this story:

The Miami Heat have had successful coaches since Pat Riley left the sidelines for the front office.

The Heat organization has groomed the likes of Erik Spoelstra, David Fizdale and Juwan Howard. And it appears assistant Chris Quinn is next in line to make the leap to head coach.

That was evident when the Heat ran a play Quinn designed in Friday's victory against the Houston Rockets. The play called for Jimmy Butler to receive an alley-opp pass from Gabe Vincent off the inbounds.

"That's what happens when you got a guy from Notre Dame that's smart," Butler said. "... He's going to be a head coach one day very, very soon."

Quinn is in his ninth year with the Heat. He's learned from Spoelstra, one of the best in  NBA history. He's also gained experience while filling in for Spoelstra last year when he was in the league's health and safety protocols.

“Spo is a top 15 coach of all time," Quinn said last season. "Any time you have a mentor of that level, also with coach Riley around so much, mentors of that level. I’ve learned in my seven or eight years of coaching tremendously from Spo. It only makes sense that my voice sounds like him at this point.”
