Free Agent Christian Wood To Miami Heat Rumors Picking Up Steam

Free agent Christian Wood could be interested in signing with the Miami Heat under certain circumstances

Unrestricted free agent center Christian Wood has potential interest in signing with the Miami Heat.

Wood spent last season with the Dallas Mavericks, where he was heavily underutilized. Depending on the outcome of the Damian Lillard-Miami saga, The Athletic’s Jovan Buha believes Wood may sign with the Heat.

Buha discussed this situation alongside Trevor Lane on the Lakers Nation podcast.

"Christian Wood, from my understanding, is interested in a potential role in Miami—depending on what players are involved in that [Damian Lillard] trade," Buha said. "From the Miami side, Nikola Jovic is someone that would likely go to Portland or elsewhere, and then does Jusuf Nurkić come back," Buha said. "… If they add Nurkić I think that frontcourt is set. If they don't and get rid of Jović, can Wood come in and outplay [Kevin] Love and [Thomas] Bryant?"

Last season, Wood averaged 16.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks on 51.5 percent shooting. He could certainly outplay an aging Love and a mediocre Bryant. He thrives as a stretch five because of his ability to knock down spot-up 3-pointers.

However, as Buha said, if Nurkić is acquired alongside Lillard, Miami’s frontcourt may be somewhere Wood looks to avoid. He is looking for an expanded role, which could be found on the Heat as a backup to All-Star Bam Adebayo.
