Erik Spoelstra Gives High Praise To Improvement Of Jamal Cain’s Defense

Forward Jamal Cain’s defense impressed Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra in Wednesday’s preseason loss against the Brooklyn Nets

Forward Jamal Cain is making a case for a regular-season contract after multiple standout performances in the preseason.

In Wednesday’s loss against the Brooklyn Nets, Cain scored seven points along with 14 rebounds and one steal in 29 minutes. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra showed high praise for Cain’s defensive improvement.

"To be able to play in our defensive system, you have to have a level of discipline and focus," Spoelstra said. "He has the effort. He has the intensity. He has the quickness, the quick twitch, all the stuff that stands out. He's been committed to the process ... I give him a lot of credit for that."

With a crowded forward room consisting of Jimmy Butler, Caleb Martin, Nikola Jovic, and Jaime Jaquez Jr., Cain's defense is a key to him receiving meaningful playing time.

"It's gratifying to see improvement from a young player, particularly when it's not easy," Spoelstra said. "It's just not easy for undrafted guys. You have probably more tough days than you have breakthrough days. He's stayed the course."

Cain, alongside Dru Smith and Cole Swider, are the favorites to receive a standard deal from the Heat. With one preseason game remaining, Cain will look to close out the preseason with a memorable performance.
