Erik Spoelstra's Contract Extension Could Impact Golden State Warriors Coach Steve Kerr's Upcoming Contract

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr could have a major payday coming his way, according to one writer

Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra shocked the market with his eight-year, $120-plus million contract extension.

This deal is bridging connections with another premier coach in the NBA. Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr is set for an extension after this season, which The Athletic's Sam Amick believes will be impacted by Spoelstra's contract.

"Yet the more interesting observation relating to Spoelstra’s deal, from this vantage point, is that it will have an inevitable impact in the talks between Golden State coach Steve Kerr and owner Joe Lacob about his next deal," Amick wrote. "Before the Spoelstra contract, it was Detroit’s Monty Williams who was setting the bar so high (he signed a six-year, $72 million deal in May). But Kerr, whose contract expires after this season and who has twice as many coaching title belts as Spoelstra, has an even stronger argument for a massive payday now."

Golden State's disappointing play this season might escape attention given Spoelstra's extension. They hold a 17-20 record as the No. 12 seed in the Western Conference. Outside of superstar guard Stephen Curry, most of the roster has underperformed. Long-time cornerstones Klay Thompson and Draymond could see a change of scenery at the Feb. 8 trade deadline if improvement is not displayed. Kerr has won four championships as the Warriors coach while earning five as a player.
