Miami Heat's Dru Smith Out For Season Due To Knee Injury
The Miami Heat were dealt with another injury blow when it was announced Friday guard Dru Smith will miss the remainder of the season.
Smith sustained a third degree knee sprain in Wednesday's victory against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Smith was considered one of the backup point guards behind Kyle Lowry.
Smith was averaging 4.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists. A former developmental player from the G League, he worked his way into the rotation this season.
The injury occurred in the first half while Smith was contesting a shot in front of the Cavs' bench. He landed awkwardly before being carried to the locker room.
After the game, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra blamed the injury on the construction of the Cavs' court. There is a small dip between the floor and the bench.
"It's a dangerous floor. I don't the history of injuries here but we've had a couple near scares in previous years when guys are closing out in that corner," Spoelstra said. "Thankfully, nobody's been injured before but it's an accident waiting to happen. You close out and all of a sudden you're going off a cliff. It's just so dangerous. As soon as he stayed down, we all knew that's probably what happened."
