Miami Heat's Udonis Haslem Says He'd Love To Mentor Ja Morant
Miami Heat veteran Udonis Haslem has used the past several years as opportunity to mentor younger players.
Haslem recently said he would love to offer some guidance to Memphis Grizzlies All-Star Ja Morant. Morant is coming off a suspension for three gun-related incidents.
Haslem spoke about Morant on an appearance in The Pivot podcast.
“I would've loved to have a relationship (with Ja Morant)," Haslem said. I speak to his father too… I understand where you come from. I understand your surroundings…understand the pressure you might feel to keep it real. But keeping it real can go wrong though, so I will show you how to move out here and still enjoy your life and maintain your independence of who you are and what you are, but the right way."
Haslem is finishing up his 20th season with the Heat. He is set to retire at the end of the season but has played a role in mentoring several teammates. Center Bam Adebayo has often spoke of Haslem's influence in the locker room.
Haslem could certainly school Morant on how to handle the NBA lifestyle.
"There is a right way," Haslem said. "I haven't changed, I have altered things and changed my life, shifted it a little bit, but I didn't change. I am very happy with where I am today, so you can still live that life. You can't be street now; you can be hood, but can't be street. There's a difference."
