NBA Analyst Kendrick Perkins On The Miami Heat: "Heat Culture Is Real"
The phrase 'Heat Culture' is often heard when discussing the Miami Heat's success in recent years.
It refers to the Heat's ability to scout and develop under-the-radar players such as Duncan Robinson, Max Strus, and Haywood Highsmith. This talent has played a major part in them reaching the NBA Finals twice since 2020.
NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins is a believer in 'Heat Culture', signaling out Robinson and Caleb Martin as prime examples.
"Look at the Miami Heat. The Heat Culture is real. It's not just because they just develop guys and then they make Finals runs and they be the underdog. No one expects them to do it. No, it's because they are able to mold these guys into actual basketball players," Perkins said on the 'Numbers On The Board' podcast. "Duncan Robinson, Duncan Robinson was probably about to be working with us. Seriously, then he got a trial, and all of a sudden he's on a $90 plus million contract. Caleb Martin, right. There had to be a phone call from J-Cole to Caron Butler to give him a shout-out. Thats the crazy part, but everybody will think, oh they held on to Udonis Haslem so long, yeah, because he was an extension of Erik Spoelstra."
Their development starts in the front office with team president Pat Riley, general manager Andy Elisburg, and coach Spoelstra. Their consistency allows the prospects time to strengthen their skills under the same system.
The Heat's latest star in the making is rookie forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. He was selected with the No. 18 pick by the Heat after four seasons at UCLA. Jaquez is averaging 12.9 points on 49.2 percent shooting while making appearances in the Rising Stars Challenge and Slam Dunk Contest over the past weekend.
