Paul Pierce Calls Out Ray Allen For Joining The Miami Heat In 2012
Ray Allen’s signing with the Miami Heat in the summer of 2012 left a sour taste in one of his former teammates’ mouths.
Hall-of-Famer Paul Pierce joined the Dan Le Batard Show on Thursday. He was asked about his former teammate Ray Allen moving from the Boston Celtics to the Miami Heat during the summer of 2012. “This is what I did hear, and it’s about Ray Allen, and I’m not even sure if it’s true,” was how Pierce started.
“Before the series was over, we heard Ray Allen was already looking for houses in Miami,” Pierce said. “While we were trying to beat them to go to the championship, he didn’t tell us, warn us, or give us a phone call.”
Allen and Pierce were teammates on the Celtics for five seasons. The players reached the postseason each year they were together, and even claimed the 2008 NBA Championship. After losing to the Heat in the 2011-12 Eastern Conference Finals, Allen joined the Heat as a free agent in the offseason. He won his second title in 2013. Pierce and the Celtics were eliminated in the first round of that same playoff.
“That did feel like a betrayal,” Pierce added. “That’s why for a couple of years we didn’t talk to Ray, or we didn’t address him.”
The ensuing beef between Allen and his former Celtics teammates was well-documented by the media for years. Allen, Pierce, and Kevin Garnett were all reunited in 2022 during Garnett’s Celtics jersey retirement.
