Undrafted Justin Powell Finds New Opportunity With Miami Heat Summer League
Washington State guard Justin Powell has agreed to join the Miami Heat for NBA Summer League.
After Powell made the decision to keep his name in the draft instead of returning for his senior season, he went undrafted.
The much-traveled Powell spent last season with the Cougars, averaging 10.4 points and 3.9 rebounds shooting 42.6 percent from three. Powell and the Cougars had a record of 17-17 last season, landing them sixth in the Pac-12.
Powell began his college career at Auburn. He had a solid year first year but decided to Tennessee, where he had a poor season. He averaged just 3.7 points and 14 minutes.
Still, Powell played well enough at Washington State to gain the interest of some NBA teams. He will receive every opportunity to earn a spot with the Heat, who are known around the NBA as one of the best organizations at developing undrafted players. Miami free agents Gabe Vincent and Max Strus both began their careers in the summer league and were later elevated to two-way contracts.
