Crown Club Growing Culture of Hornets Fandom in Charlotte
In the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, excitement and interest in the Hornets has arguably never been more widespread. One of the entities that can take credit for the spread of Hornets fandom is The Crown Club.
Founded in 2021, Crown Club initially came about as Bring Back The Buzz, an organization that lobbied for the then Charlotte Bobcats to change the team's name back to the beloved Hornets moniker.
When that mission was officially accomplished in 2014, the organization took on a new mission of growing the Hornets fan culture in Charlotte. Taking inspiration from the Carolina Panthers' Roaring Riot fan club, The Crown Club now hosts a variety of events and activities aimed at achieving that goal.
We spoke with the club's founder, Evan, about the organization.
Evan on the inspiration for Crown Club:
"We started looking around, and we had our friends at Roaring Riot. They had the whole membership structure, the away trips, the watch parties. We were like, let's bring that over to the NBA side of things.
We started building that out. We've done away trips to Atlanta, we've done New Orleans. Our goal is to do things like New York, and do Atlanta pretty much every year. But it's really just about bringing the respect.
You have 35 years of history, people have been fans of this team for so long and gone through so much. I remember in the Bobcats days it felt like you were doing it by yourself, you were the only fan. If you do things like this, it builds the community aspect of it, and we can really build it out more and garner some respect for the fanbase."
Evan on what events The Crown Club focuses on:
"We do the away trips, we do the tailgates which is 41 nights a year, we do watch parties for big games, we do charity events. Honestly, anything you can think of we can name it.
We partner up with people locally. A portion of our membership proceeds go to Safe Alliance, which is a program that helps out people that suffer from domestic abuse. So we just try to find any angle that can give back to the community and heighten the fan experience around the team."
Clearly, The Crown Club is an organization that recognizes the Hornets' importance to the city of Charlotte and is fully committed to growing its reach in the community. All Hornets are proud to have had a relationship with Crown Club since 2022 and continue to encourage Hornets fans to join and come together.
