Does Brandon Miller Start from Day One?
Brandon Miller fits exactly what the Charlotte Hornets need - a lengthy, ball-handling wing who can score at an elite level. Now, it may take some time until the No. 2 overall pick becomes one of the better scorers in the league, but you can count on that coming to fruition at some point in the not-too-distant future.
The one question I keep getting from Hornets fans is if Miller will be in the starting five from day one?
My answer is no, I don't think he will.
Gordon Hayward is entering the final year of his contract and if this season does not happen to go as the front office hopes, they can tinker with the idea of trading the 33-year-old. I'm not suggesting that he has to be in the starting five over Miller to be traded, but the more minutes he gets, the better.
As we all saw in Summer League there's still some things that Miller needs to work on, mainly on the defensive end of the floor where he racked up a ton of fouls. Plus, Hayward gives this team the best chance to win right now.
Allowing Miller to come off the bench will not only give the Hornets a scoring punch from the second group, but it would also would prevent an overload situation where there is too much pressure on his plate too early into his career. He can use this first half of the season (or possibly entire season) to be mentored by Hayward while still playing significant minutes.
There will come a point in time where it will make sense to transition Miller into a starting role and it will become clear as to when that should happen. Until then, I expect the five to be LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, Gordon Hayward, Miles Bridges, and Mark Williams.
