Grading the Mason Plumlee Trade

Our staff gives thoughts on the Hornets' move.

Eric Barnes: B+

Main objective was to get something of value for an expiring contract with Plumlee who is seen as more of a backup center around the league. The main reasoning for this is to clear the way for more Mark Williams minutes and Charlotte achieved that. When Plumlee was originally acquired they got him and moved up 20 spots in that draft in the 2nd round. Now they have added another 2nd round pick. Hornets did well in this one as I don’t think Plumlee is as valuable around the league as some out there tend to think.

Austin Leake: D+

I understand that the Hornets needed to free up minutes for Mark Williams as they should, but only getting back one second round pick is very dissatisfying. Especially if Josh Richardson is worth four seconds and Gary Payton ll is worth five. This trade was just a flat out failure for the Hornets.

James Plowright: B+

The goal going into today was to move Plumlee to create playing time for Mark Williams and Nick Richards, not take back long-term salary and pick up future assets. Mission accomplished. The 2028 Clippers pick could be a good one with the majority of their core being past their prime. This wasn't a home run, but is the solid type of trade a smart team makes at the deadline with an expiring vet.

Desmond Johnson: C-

Hornets spent two thirds of the season giving Plumlee minutes we assume to increase his trade value and all they get is an expiring Reggie Jackson contract that will be bought out and a 2028 2nd round pick that is currently sitting in 8th grade English II class. We assume it means Mark Williams will now start but it would not surprise me at all if Clifford still doesn't start him for no reason what so ever. Feels like the Hornets settled last minute for anything they could get.
