Why You Shouldn't Be Concerned With Brandon Miller...Yet

It's easy to overreact, but don't. You'd be wasting your time.

In this story:

Brandon Miller hasn't really taken the NBA by storm through his first two games in summer action with the Charlotte Hornets and to some extent, he's underwhelmed.

But don't take what you've seen through two games as a red flag.

It's way too early to start the "they made the wrong decision" argument. There's a lot of reasons why he and the Hornets have looked far from impressive.

For starters, they lack size underneath but more importantly, and what correlates more to Miller's slow start is the lack of a true point guard. Charlotte has a bunch of off-ball guards handling the ball, running the offense and even has Miller running it on occasion. When you have several guys playing out of position paired with the fact that they've never played together as a group, it's a lot to overcome.

I know, I know, every team is going through the same thing. They are to a certain extent. A lot of these Summer League rosters have returning players on them though, whereas the Hornets have four draft picks and a few undrafted guys as well. It's not necessarily an excuse but more so an explanation as to why the Hornets have looked out of sorts through two games.

It's also another reason why you shouldn't panic about Miller.

When we reach the regular season, he's going to be on the floor with LaMelo Ball and presumably Terry Rozier, meaning he's going to have veteran guys around him that can handle the rock and create open looks for him versus having to fight for everything right now.

He's the number two pick, so with that comes a lot of attention. Teams know how well he can score it and how Charlotte has to run the offense through him to have a chance of winning in the summer. With that attention also comes a lot of pressure. And that's not to say this is a sign of Miller being unable to handle it. This, in all honesty, is what you would expect. He's shaking the rust off and working through learning the sets and how his teammates play.

The draft just took place two weeks ago. That's not a lot of time to learn and really prepare for what you're going to face in Summer League. He will have games where he goes for 20 and maybe even 25+ over the course of the next week, showcasing why the Hornets made him the pick at number two.

If we're still having these conversations say, next March, then there will be a legitimate reason to be concerned. But right now, it's all an overreaction. Don't get caught up in it.
