Early Celtics Playoff Loss Could Lead Jaylen Brown to Jazz
Tuesday night's Eastern Conference Semifinals game marked another loss for the Boston Celtics, bringing them down to a 3-2 deficit in their second-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers. In a season filled with many championship expectations, a series loss in round two would be a supreme disappointment for Boston.
In a league such as the NBA, change will be inevitable if your team fails to succeed over a shorter period of time as opposed to other leagues, like the NFL or MLB. We've seen cases of some superstar duos and trios being broken up after a season, or even a few games. If you need any proof of this actually happening, go look up the 2021 Brooklyn Nets and see how they ended.
With what could be a 5th-straight year running with the core of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Celtics could decide to trade one of the two in order to make a what they would see as a 'neccessary change' to the team's roster.
We've been no stranger to hearing the whispers of rumors of the Celtics trading Jaylen Brown. While at pretty much every opportunity anyone of the organization has been asked about it, the idea's been shut down, a playoff shortcoming could force Boston's hand to make a drastic move this offseason.
In an interview with Logan Murdoch of The Ringer, Brown discussed how his upcoming future with the franchise may look:
"I don’t know. As long as I’m needed. It’s not up to me,” he says. “We’ll see how they feel about me over time and I feel about them over time. Hopefully, whatever it is, it makes sense. But I will stay where I’m wanted. I will stay where I’m needed and treated correct…"
When it comes to potential suitors, the Utah Jazz offer a competitive package of a potential deal. The Jazz already have some young talent to dish out if they wanted in Walker Kessler, Ochai Agbaji, and Talen Horton-Tucker, all three being 23-years-old and under. Combine this with the multitude of first round picks the team has stashed away until 2027, and there's a serious asset pool to work with.
The cherry on top comes when you consider current Jazz CEO Danny Ainge's history with the Boston Celtics, along with coach Will Hardy also being a part of the Celtics' coaching staff in 2021. With some familiar faces in the building, maybe this could even tantalize Jaylen himself to come play in Salt Lake City.
Okay now, let's slow down a bit. All of this is just purely speculation. Even if a trade were available for the young All-Star, putting all of these assets towards one single player is a big ask. We've seen how mega-deals like this can backfire and derail a team's future for multiple years. If you need any proof of this actually happening, go look up the 2013 Brooklyn Nets and see how they ended.
However, if the Jazz were actually serious about putting all of their eggs in one basket, a 76ers serious win could lead the Celtics to a potential meltdown after yet another playoff loss. A big haul would certainly be neccesary, but a trade for Brown could lead to him eventually pave the way for him to become the best two-way wing in Jazz team history.
