Donovan Mitchell on Rudy Gobert: 'We Trust Each Other'
The Utah Jazz are flying high after defeating the Dallas Mavericks in Game 4 of the Western Conference first-round playoffs, 100-99. With the series tied 2-2, the next game comes Monday in Dallas.
Fighting back from the brink of what would have been a very bleak series split, the Jazz now have the space to breathe and refocus. One thing that hasn't made breathing all that easy of late are the rumors of discord between the team's two stars — Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert.
However, after Saturday's victory, Mitchell inadvertently continued the deconstruction of that narrative with a noteworthy post-game remark.
"I think it's funny, man," Mitchell said via Eric Walden of the Salt Lake City Tribune. "But it felt good, because you hear [the things that are said]. … We trust each other."
Mitchell's alley-oop pass to Gobert, slammed home thunderously for the game-winning score, was a beauty. The chemistry and comfortability between the two players were evident in that one play.
Gobert was a tad less diplomatic when asked about the rumors and negativity post-game.
'F--- the talk," Gobert said courtside.
Mitchell and Gobert combined for 40 points in Game 4. What the duo brought to the court on the intangible side can't be quantified.
Utah's star duo remains one of the premier NBA pairings. Mitchell and Gobert can solidify and build on that reputation by defeating the Mavs in this series and advancing to the next round of the playoffs instead of giving up the ghost in yet another one-and-done series.
That's what Jazz fans are dying to see. And it would assuage a lot of the concerns within the Utah faithful that these pervasive rumors have engendered of late.
