Jazz G Collin Sexton on Upcoming Season: ‘I Plan to Play the Whole 82'
Since coming over from the Cleveland Cavaliers as a part of the blockbuster trade involving Donovan Mitchell a summer ago, Utah Jazz G Collin Sexton has been unable to steer clear of the injury bug. After a nagging hamstring injury kept him out of action for 34 games, this season will hope to be a healthy one for the six-year league vet.
Thankfully, Sexton has been voicing some encouraging optimism surrounding his availability for the 2023-24 season. During NBA Media Day, he discussed some of the troubles returning from injury, along with the difference in how he feels coming into this season as opposed to last.
“I put my time in. I feel healthy. I’m excited,” Collin states. "Coming off an injury last year and playing, it was different. I wasn’t able to work out in the summer. I wasn’t able to play, but this summer I was able to play as well as lift and get to the goals I wanted to, and I feel great. I’m excited and I plan to play the whole 82 this year."
Sexton has reached the 82-game mark once in his career in his rookie season in 2018. With an increased emphasis on player participation around the league this year, seeing a fully healthy Sexton on the floor in each Jazz game is not out of the realm of possibilities
Collin later went on to wind back the clock to last year to discuss his rehab process throughout last season, along with some of the tough battles that came as a part of it.
“I would say it’s very, very frustrating,” he says. "Just because you have to have some type of patience, and after a while, your patience tends to go away a little bit. But, I would say patience was one thing I had to continue to learn and know that we’re just trying to finish the year. Finish the year strong and finish the year healthy. That’s all that mattered."
With a complete summer of preparation behind him, we could be in for a revitalized Sexton this season. Combined with other talented guards on the roster, such as Jordan Clarkson, Kris Dunn, Talen Horton-Tucker, and rookie Keyonte George, this Utah team may have one of the deeper backcourt cores in the association.
The Jazz will take on the Sacramento Kings during their season opener on October 25th in the Delta Center, hoping to kick off their 2023-24 campaign with a W in the record books.
