Jazz Continue to Be Linked With Interest to Acquire Heat G Tyler Herro

The Damian Lillard trade saga has begun to creep back into headlines as we get closer and closer to training camps. A deal strung out for a series of long months has new rumors popping up by the day, with the newest one no different.
According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports, the Utah Jazz have appeared again as a team to watch to help the Miami Heat facilitate a Damian Lillard deal. As reported, Utah could find themselves as a third or fourth team in a potential trade to acquire Tyler Herro:
"Keep an eye on Utah playing a potential role in a three- or four-team outcome of these Lillard conversations. If Portland ultimately does business with Miami, the Jazz — as well as the Bulls, Hornets and Nets — are considered a team interested in landing Tyler Herro from the Heat, sources said. And there are plenty of executives who’d rather take Miami’s best package, if the Heat are so willing, that could include Herro and Nikola Jovic to go with Jaquez, Caleb Martin and more."
The Jazz have been previously mentioned as a candidate to acquire the Heat guard this offseason, but logistics concerning the return for the Portland Trail Blazers have prevented any forward progress on sending Dame to South Beach. However, considering how close we are now to the season, finding a package for Portland to settle on has found some increased urgency to find the right deal.
Herro is coming off a solid 2022-23 campaign with the Heat with averages of 20.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. While a hand injury ultimately kept him out of an inspiring Miami Finals run during the playoffs, he’s a capable scoring guard who could be a spark plug for Utah offensively if brought in.

A hurdle for the Jazz to cross in a potential transaction would be factoring in Herro’s massive contract in play for the foreseeable future. Signed to a $120M/four-year deal that lasts until the summer of 2027 would effectively lock Utah into a hefty cap number that could lead to some monetary issues down the line.
Utah thankfully has some trade-friendly contracts available to send away in a deal to help ease some of that financial burden. G Collin Sexton’s 3-year contract stays under $20M annually for its entire duration, making it a digestible deal for an opposing team to swallow. Expiring deals like G Talen Horton-Tucker and C Kelly Olynyk can also get some looks from other teams eyeing to get involved. The Jazz also have their assortment of draft picks they could put into a proposal if necessary.
With motion beginning to pick up again on the Lillard front as we enter next season, keep an eye out for increasing developments that come with it leading to the official training camp opening on October 3rd.
