Jazz Trade Deadline: 5 Players With Rising, Falling Stock

The phone will be ringing at Utah Jazz HQ this season.

The rumors regarding the Utah Jazz have been hot and heavy this season. With the rebuild still in its infancy, Jazz fans can expect a roster reshuffle or two to happen before the February 8 trade deadline. 

Out of the five most likely Jazz players to be moved, let’s take a look at where their trade stock is trending as we hit the 30-game mark of the 2023-24 season.

Collin Sexton: Stock Up

Sexton started the year as a potential solution at the point guard position, but uneven play and the emergence of Keyonte George have put that option to bed. However, the injuries to George and Jordan Clarkson created a second opportunity, and Sexton has made the most of it.

Over the seven-game span that he's started, Sexton is averaging 23.2 points a game while dishing out 4.4 assists. The former lottery pick looks much more comfortable as a scoring threat at the two rather than a facilitator at the one.

Sexton's contract runs through 2026, with $37.1 million owed over those two years. It’s been a rocky road thus far, but based on his current production, the phone should be ringing at Jazz HQ to inquire about his availability. Keep in mind Sexton is only 24 years old.

Jordan Clarkson: Stock Down

Clarkson showed that he still has gas left in the tank with his recent 30-point performance against the Toronto Raptors. He’s a professional scorer who can be a spark plug off the bench for a team contending for a championship.

The issues with Clarkson are a combination of his age (31 years old), contract, and availability. He's missed 30 games since last year's trade deadline, and that will be a concern, considering his contract runs through 2026.

It helps his trade value with Utah front-loading his contract in year one, but Jazz fans shouldn't expect a first-round pick in return because of the longer risk a buyer will need to take on for his services.

Kelly Olynyk: Stock Up

Although Olynyk is 32 years old, he’ll have more demand than Clarkson because his contract expires this year. Olynyk brings versatility and a veteran presence to a playoff contender with no long-term risk.

Also, moving Olynyk will clear a path for rookie Taylor Hendricks to get more live reps at the NBA level. All of the stars are lined up for Olynyk to get moved before the trade deadline. From this point of view, he’s the most likely to be suiting up in a different uniform at some point this season.

Talen Horton-Tucker: Stock Up

Just like Sexton, ‘THT’ has reemerged since being inserted back into the starting lineup. Another player whose contract expires this year will put teams with salary cap problems in 2024 in play for his services.

Although his play on the court doesn’t warrant being a starter for a playoff team, there’s the possibility of being able to contribute off the bench. Horton-Tucker’s consistency has always been an issue, but due to his age, high ceiling, and expiring contract, there should be a market for what he can provide.

Simone Fontecchio: Stock Down

Fontecchio has had some nice moments in his second year in Salt Lake City, but at this stage, all he has to offer is a contract that expires at year's end.

He’s not going to crack the rotation of a team contending for a title, and at 28 years old, he may have already hit his ceiling. If Fontecchio does get moved, it would most likely be because his contract is needed to help facilitate another trade.
