Does a Tyler Herro trade to the Utah Jazz make sense?

It wouldn’t be a Utah Jazz offseason without a new name being mentioned as a possible trade on a weekly basis. This one comes from Bleacher Report's NBA pundit Zach Buckley, manufacturing what he sees as a dream trade scenario involving Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro and the Jazz.

“Tyler Herro fits that label like a tailored suit. The 23-year-old just capped consecutive campaigns with 20-plus points and four-plus assists, yet it's possible he is nowhere near as good as he can get. Utah has the time to bet on his development and see how it plays out. The Miami Heat, meanwhile, may not have the same luxury with 33-year-old Jimmy Butler feeling the time crunch of his championship window.”

On the surface, it may sound like a winner — until taking a closer look. Adding Herro certainly would be an upgrade over Collin Sexton, who would likely be part of the deal in order to match salaries. However, Herro might not be a player on Jazz CEO Danny Ainge’s radar, considering the comments that were made in his postseason interview. Remember, Herro has never been known for his defensive prowess.

“But like Will [Hardy] said in his press conference—we need to get better defensively,” Ainge said on April 11.

When you also consider what’s left on Hero’s contract (three years/$93M), the amount of draft capital it would require, and the jury still being out on second-year player Ochai Agbaji, it feels closer to a nightmare than a dream trade.

Lastly, when sacrificing draft capital in an exchange, it should be for a player that the Jazz front office is fairly confident it can keep for the long haul. Herro becomes an unrestricted free agent in three years, which doesn’t bode well for the small-market Jazz.

Remember, Utah cut Donovan Mitchell loose with three years left on his contract. Jazz fans can chalk this one up as ubiquitous offseason water-cooler talk.
