Jazz HC Will Hardy Capitalizing on His Team's Depth
The Utah Jazz defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 114-112 on Monday night in Salt Lake City. The victory marked the fifth consecutive time the Jazz have outed the Pelicans at home.
Defense and depth were once again key ingredients to help seal Utah's win. Coach Will Hardy is taking advantage of his team's depth and displaying a variety of coaching strategies.
Notable adjustments are Hardy's confidence in center Omer Yurtseven and forward Simone Fontecchio, both of whom turned in rock-solid performances on Monday night. Hardy elected to reward 10 Jazzmen with game minutes, and seven scored in double figures.
Keyonte George got the party started from the tip and led his team in scoring with 19 points, grabbed five rebounds, handed out three assists, and garnered two steals. Not too shabby for 'The Kid.'
Jordan Clarkson looked much more in control, posting 16 points and 10 assists. Although he only shot 25% from the field, Clarkson committed one turnover — an area he has struggled in this season. John Collins threw in 12 points and reserves Walker Kessler, Ochai Agbaji, and Collin Sexton scored 14, 12, and 11 points, respectively.
Last but not least is the player of the game — Fontecchio — who was rewarded with a starting nod against the Pelicans. His skill set is prototypical for today's NBA game style. He was tasked with defending Pelican All-Star Brandon Ingram and, at times, Zion Williamson.
Yet, on offense, Fontecchio has been able to calibrate his jump-shooting mechanics and may have parlayed his way into game action on a regular basis. When Lauri Markkenen returns, Fontecchio may return to a reserve role, but he's a bright spot for the Jazz moving forward.
The Pelicans were led in scoring by their two best players, Williamson and Ingram, who scored 26 and 25 points, respectively. Center Joans Valanciunas dropped 14 points, snagged 13 rebounds and played an overall good game.
There's not much time to celebrate as the Jazz will take on the Memphis Grizzlies in Tennessee on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm.
Jazz Nation can get somewhat excited as the future is young and bright in Salt Lake City.
