Previewing How the Jazz Depth Chart Shakes Out After 2023 NBA Draft
With the 2023 NBA Draft coming to a close, the Utah Jazz can now take a step back to evaluate the state of the roster stands amongst the league. The front office can now see where the team can now improve on the open market with free agency coming just around the corner.
The team managed to luck out and add a valuable guard, wing, and big to the roster with their three first-round picks last Thursday. Adding that amount of diverse, young talent does allow some questions to develop on what that means for the remainder of the guys on the squad.
For simplicity's sake, here’s the current layout of the Utah Jazz roster before free agency starts in July:
PG: Collin Sexton, Keyonte George, Kris Dunn
SG: Jordan Clarkson, Ochai Agbaji, Talen Horton-Tucker
SF: Lauri Markkanen, Brice Sensabaugh, Simone Fonteccio
PF: John Collins, Taylor Hendricks, Kelly Olynyk, Luka Samanic, Joey Hauser*
C: Walker Kessler, Damian Jones, Vernon Carey Jr., Micah Potter*
Those italicized have pending player options for the 2023-24 season.
Those designated with a “*” are signed to a two-way contract for the 2023-24 season.
The new additions of Keyonte George and Brice Sensabaugh inevitably bring the future of both Clarkson and Horton-Tucker into question. Bringing in not one, but two players that can play a similar role to both of them makes you wonder if the front office wants to invest more into what could be some expensive players on the open market.
It’s very well possible we see one, or even both return for next season. However, the overall direction of the rebuilding Jazz could prevent re-signing veteran players (such as Jordan Clarkson) to create more playing time for the rookie additions.
As for the frontcourt, the battle between John Collins and Taylor Hendricks as the starting power forward will be an interesting storyline to follow at the start of this season. Kelly Olynyk’s roster spot does become foggy as a result of the new acquisitions, but we’ll see how the offseason unfolds before making any final judgement.
Fans will be able to get more clearance on how the rest of the roster will shake out as we move through and past the 2023 NBA free-agency period.
