Jazz Throw Social Media Shade at Pistons Run at History
The Detroit Pistons are on the verge of making history for all the wrong reasons, and the Utah Jazz decided to throw some salt in the wound. After the 119-111 victory on Thursday night, the Jazz's social media team posted a video poking fun at the struggling Pistons.
The post that could be seen on Tic Toc referenced a clip from SpongeBob SquarePants that poked fun at the Piston's current 25-game losing streak. The NBA record for consecutive losses in one season is 26, currently owned by the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers.
To make matters worse, ex-Piston Kelly Olynyk had his best game of the year, scoring 27 points on 10-for-16 shooting. Olynyk was acquired by the Jazz last year in the Bogan Bogdanovic exchange with Detroit. Olynyk spoke on his mindset prior to the game versus his ex-employer
“I knew we had a bunch of guys out, and we're gonna need some offensive punch,” Olynyk said. “I was trying to be aggressive right from the start.”
It wasn’t long ago when the Pistons were at least attempting to play for keeps. The acquisition of Bogdonavic was a move a team makes that have their eyes on making the playoffs, but since the exchange, nothing could be further from the truth.
The Pistons are now only two games from breaking the all-time consecutive loss record in one season. The game against Utah was the best chance of avoiding a date with history. In fact, Detriot was favored by 2.5 points heading into the contest against an injury-riddled Jazz team.
Pistons head coach Monte Williams was well aware of what was at stake against Utah as he spoke on the matter in his post game press conference.
“I want to be careful with my words because this one hurts more than most of them," Williams said.
The way it’s trending, the Jazz will most likely face the Pistons again during this historical feat. Utah hosts Detroit on January 3 at the Delta Center. Prior to that game, the Pistons will play the Brooklyn Nets twice, the Boston Celtics, the Toronto Raptors, and the Houston Rockets.
We’ll call it a better-than-a-coin flip chance Utah will have another shot at contributing to history.
