Kings' Domantas Sabonis Sounds Off on the Importance of Final Stretch
There’s only four more games for the Sacramento Kings to jump into the 6th seed in the Western Conference, and escape the play-in tournament. While the play-in is better than missing the playoffs entirely, there’s some lethal veteran squads that could knock out an inexperienced Sacramento crew if that’s what it comes down to.
Following a couple of season ending injuries to some offensive machines in Kevin Huerter and Malik Monk, the Kings have a revamped look heading into the playoffs. Head coach Mike Brown has turned his attention to guard Keon Ellis to play alongside De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, the two players that run this team.
Sabonis’ production has been something out of a movie with the eighth-year big man averaging career high numbers across the board. Averaging the most rebounds in the league, the Kings’ center is dominating the paint night-in and night-out while continuing to contribute to the offensive scheme for Mike Brown.
Recently, the big man sat down with Adrian Wojnarowski on “The Woj Pod” to discuss Sacramento’s season and his own record breaking numbers, however, Sabonis says his numbers aren’t important to him (via The Woj Pod):
“It’s an honor and awesome to be mentioned with one of the greats in my position, but at the end of the day, I’m just going out there and playing my game. As a big you have to rebound, you have to finish… I don’t really pay attention to it, you know.”
With only a few games left, Sabonis discussed what the loss of Monk and Huerter meant for the team and how they have to adjust (via The Woj Pod):
“Those are two big pieces… Those are two guys that I play my two-man game with, you know, so you got to find different ways to get everyone involved or be more effective. And these are conversations that we have to have with Coach and De’Aaron Fox… We got five games left. And they’re the most important games this season for us right now.”
As the Kings look to close out the season with some big-time wins, look for Sabonis to continue dominating the glass and feeding energy into a Sacramento squad that desperately needs it.
