Kings’ Domantas Sabonis on Pace to Reach Wilt Chamberlain-Esque Numbers
To begin the Sacramento Kings’ 2023-24 campaign, things have kicked off extremely well. The team holds an 8-4 record on the year, good enough for the best in the Pacific Division and fourth overall in the Western Conference.
It’s been a fantastic team effort to start, but some players have been shining on an individual basis, one being 3x All-Star and 1x All-NBA C Domantas Sabonis.
In his eighth-year pro, Sabonis has been doing it all on the stat sheet, averaging 20.8 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 7.2 assists. If you were wondering, no player in over 50 years has been able to put up those types of numbers in more than one season.
Throughout NBA history, there has only been one other player to reach the same stat line: Wilt Chamberlain. A feat he achieved twice throughout his 14-year career in 1967 and 1968, both times with the Philadelphia 76ers. Sabonis is on pace to do it for his third time this year; truly unprecedented and consistent production.
While, yes, we are not quite seeing Sabonis put up the types of mythical numbers Chamberlain had back in the '60s on a nightly basis, but it is resulting in some substantial team success. The Kings have put up six straight wins and have yet to lose a game since De’Aaron Fox returned from his ankle injury.
We might be less than 20% of the way through the NBA calendar, but it looks like we’re in for another stellar season from Sabonis. With or without Fox in the lineup, he continues to put forth elite scoring ability, passing sense, and is consistently a monster on the glass.
Sabonis will look to continue his historic stretch and extend Sacramento’s win streak to seven on Monday when the Kings take on the New Orleans Pelicans in the Golden One Center.
