Kings Offered Barnes Before Backing Out of Siakam Trade

The Kings hastily pulled out of their trade talks after a deal was not quickly made.

The Sacramento Kings have placed three players on the trade block - F Harrison Barnes, G Kevin Huerter, and G Davion Mitchell. The team is looking to make a trade to land someone who can make a monstrous big three alongside All-Star G De'Aaron Fox and All-Star C Domantas Sabonis.

Last week, it was revealed that the Kings were in advanced talks for the acquisition of Toronto Raptors F Pascal Siakam, but the deal was quickly called off a few hours later. Since then, it has been revealed that the Kings offered a package based around Harrison Barnes for Siakam, according to Shams Charania.

“I’m told the Raptors and Kings were in active conversations about a Pascal Siakam trade revolving around Harrison Barnes… At this point, the only way it ignites is if Toronto comes back to Sacramento.”

Shams reports that the Kings want a deal done sooner rather than later to mesh chemistry on the team as they gear up for another playoff run. The February 8 trade deadline is one month out, so getting a headstart before the closing months of the season would be an advantage.

The Kings also are worried about the framework, and after offering Barnes, they reportedly don't want that package to change much. Shams reports that when the deal did not happen quickly, the Kings informed the Raptors that they were withdrawing from trade talks.

While the talks are not going on currently, there are chances they do reignite. Toronto could come back to Sacramento to begin new trade talks and make a different offer, or Sacramento could improve their offer. 

Regardless of any deal, Siakam has leverage on his destination due to his expiring contract. A concern for any team that trades for him would be his willingness to re-sign in the summer. However, if the Kings landed Siakam and he did not re-sign, they would have a massive amount of cap space and could attempt to land a high-profile target in free agency.

Siakam is averaging 22.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 5 assists this season. Barnes is averaging 11.4 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists.
