Kings’ Cap Space in ‘Great Spot’ for 2024 According to NBA Insider
Even with being fresh off (or technically still in the motions) of the 2023 NBA offseason, it has not stopped league insiders from looking far ahead to next summer. For the Sacramento Kings, some early predictions and forecasts are already to their benefit.
After a successful 2022-23 season, the Kings went into this summer playing with house money. With the team’s current state and timeline way ahead of what anyone expected, Sacramento held off from making any significant adjustments to the roster on hand. As it goes, if it ain't broke, don’t fix it.
Therefore, the Kings took a conservative approach across the past few months leading into the upcoming season. Additions of players like Chris Duarte, Colby Jones, and Nerlens Noel likely will not be making any top national headlines, but present some gratifying value to this rotation for 2023-24.
Now with eyes ahead for what the Kings can do with opportunity next year, Kings fans can anticipate even more positive strides. According to Spotrac’s Keith Smith, the Kings are projected to be in a 'great spot' for their upcoming 2024 offseason looking to stand around $20 million outside of the luxury tax:
Sacramento is coming off their best season in forever, and they’ve got the ability to keep the good times rolling. The Kings should be about $20 million clear of the luxury tax line next summer. They’ll use some of the clearance to re-sign Malik Monk, but Sacramento should still have enough room to use the full Non-Taxpayer MLE. For a team that doesn’t need a lot, that’s a great spot to be in.
Without a complete abundance of cap room to work with, this is still one of the best spots for a winning franchise to be in financially. Not being forced to pay any luxury tax while having the flexibility to add another piece to the roster gives Sacramento every chance to only get better.
Getting a deal done with Malik Monk would end up restricting Sacramento just a bit, however, it likely will not end up being a cap-crippling signing. Time will only tell how much Monk will be worth after a full season of play, but the price tag should be a reasonable one.
Now with All-Stars De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis signed onto the roster long-term, the Kings’ front office can now transition comfortably to adding the right contributing pieces around them to become a true Finals contender.
