Sacramento Kings Unveil Commemorative Logo to Celebrate Centennial Season
The Sacramento Kings have quite a long history - in fact, they have the longest history of any NBA team. The organization was founded in 1923, 18 years before the next organization of the Detroit Pistons.
To celebrate 916 Day (the area code of Sacramento on 9/16) and to commemorate 100 years of the organization, the Kings unveiled a 100-year anniversary logo that will be displayed on team merchandise this season at the Kings Team Store. The Kings also announced a number of celebratory nights during the season.
The logo, which was designed in collaboration with Todd Radom, takes on the royal blue colors sported by the Kings in the past before the Kings made the official switch the purple. Each jewel in the crown represents one of the five cities that was once home to the Kings.
The franchise began as the semi-professional Rochester Seagrams. The team made the switch to the Rochester Royals when they joined the National Basketball League in 1945 before joining the NBA in 1948. The Royals won the NBA Championship in 1951, marking the only championship in franchise history.
The next city in the organization's history was Cincinnati when the Royals moved there in 1957. That lasted for 15 years before the move to Kansas City and Omaha, where we officially got the "Kings" name to avoid confusion with the MLB Kansas City Royals. The Kansas City-Omaha Kings split time between both cities due to a lack of arena deals before eventually becoming the Kansas City Kings.
In 1985, the Kings made their move to their current home of Sacramento, where we saw high points in the Mitch Richmond era and a 55-win season in 2000-01 followed by a 61-win season in 2001-02 as "The Greatest Show on Court" under legendary coach Rick Adelman.
The modern-era Kings look to continue dominance as the most efficient offense in NBA history in their centennial season under head coach Mike Brown and look to gain their first ring since 1951.
