Knicks GM Scott Perry is OUT; Could New York Hire Warriors Ex Bob Myers?
Scott Perry's contract is expiring and the New York Knicks will be "parting ways'' with the general manager. Maybe that's a nice way of saying "fired.'' And now? The Leon Rose-led Knicks need to find a smart path to being able to say "hired.'' ...
Which is where the name of Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers, who just stepped down after his wildly successful time there, pops up.
First to Perry, the 59-year-old GM who joined the Knicks in 2017 and deserves credit for the eventual turnaround of a woeful franchise that this year made the NBA Playoffs. His contract expires this summer and as first reported by Newsday, that will mark the end of his tenure at Madison Square Garden under owner James Dolan.
Perry helped the Knicks make the playoffs in 2020-21 for the first time in eight years, and along with president of basketball operations Rose and head coach Tom Thibodeau, has worked to create a competitive foundation in New York.
There are still questions about why Perry is out, but it can be a fair assumption that the Knicks - who won 47 games this year, their most since 2012-13, and then won their first playoff series in a decade - are moving ahead with a plan in mind. This week, Myers stepped down from Golden State; maybe that's a pipe dream, as he talked this week about not feeling able to fully "commit'' to the job. Also worth mentioning: The Knicks last year added to their front office former Minnesota Timberwolves president Gersson Rosas, and he could be a logical - and even planned - successor.
