What Could Keep Knicks' Jalen Brunson Out of 2024 NBA All-Star Game?
Not many players in the NBA have been deadlier from three-point range than New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson. The second-year Knick has built a career-best 26.1-point scoring average off another personal high, as he's shooting over 45 percent from deep, good for seventh in the NBA among qualified shooters entering Tuesday night play.
That and more, however, apparent isn't enough for some to include him on their hypothetical lineups for the upcoming NBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis.
A compilation of hypothetical lineups for the exhibition from Bleacher Report kept Brunson off the Eastern Conference list, placing him among the "wild cards" to make the roster instead. List compilers Dan Favale and Grant Hughes want to see more of Brunson without Julius Randle in the lineup.
"Brunson has a bottom-six shot quality among everyone to notch at least 500 minutes, according to PBP Stats," Brunson's accompanying analysis reads. "If you're looking for him to have a stronger starting case—or you're somehow offended he's a wild card—we need to see a little more from him during his minutes without Julius Randle."
Why 'Ideal' Knicks Trade Target Dejounte Murray is a 'Moot Point'
According to Basketball Reference, Brunson has played just over 36 minutes without Randle on the floor so far this season. In those showings, the Knicks are getting outscored by an average of 12 and putting up more than 10 fewer assists per 100 possessions.
Brunson will have plenty of opportunities to prove his All-Star worthiness before voting ends on Jan. 20. The next lands on Wednesday night when the Knicks (17-12) face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first part of a three-game road trip to close out the calendar year (8 p.m. ET, MSG).
