Knicks Injuries: What's Quentin Grimes' Status for Game 4 vs. Cavaliers? (UPDATED)
Will the New York Knicks have to go after a commanding 3-1 series without the services of one of their starters?
It appears time will tell, as the team announced on Saturday that Quentin Grimes (shoulder) would be questionable for a critical fourth game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon at Madison Square Garden (1 p.m. ET, ABC). New York owns a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal set after a 99-79 win on Friday night.
The Knicks built a good portion of that lead without the services of Grimes, who went to the MSG locker room before the halftime horn. He was officially listed as questionable to return with a contused right shoulder but did not play at all in the second half, which saw the Knicks lead by as much as 29 and prevent Cleveland from getting any closer than nine.
Josh Hart replaced Grimes in the starting lineup when the second half tipped off.
[[UPDATE: 4/23/23, 12:35 p.m. ET]]: The Knicks have announced that Grimes is out for Sunday's game and that Hart will start in his place.
While Grimes has struggled over the first three playoff games of his career (averages of 3.7 points and 3.3 rebounds while hitting only two of his first 11 attempts), he left a lasting mark upon it when he sank the clinching free throws of the series' first game, a 101-97 win at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. The sophomore and 2021 first-round pick has been a mainstay in the New York starting five since mid-November and came up particularly big during the final stretch that sealed the Knicks into the Eastern Conference's fifth seed. Over the final nine regular season games, Grimes averaged 21.9 points and shot 54 percent from the field.
In addition to Grimes, the Knicks' Saturday injury report also featured center Jericho Sims, who will be held out of Game 4 entirely. The big man Sims has once again fallen out of the New York rotation as head coach Tom Thibodeau has opted to use Mitchell Robinson and Isaiah Hartenstein in the interior.
