Why Quentin Grimes Has Knicks' 'Highest Ceiling'
New York Knicks guard Quentin Grimes has the highest ceiling of any prospect on the team according to Bleacher Report.
“More than just playing the role as a spot-up shooter, Grimes does a good job playing off Brunson and Randle,” Bleacher Report's Mo Dakhil writes on a listing for all 30 teams. “He does a good job making the right cuts at precisely the right times. As good as Grimes is, he needs playmakers like (Jalen) Brunson and/or (Julius) Randle to set him up for scores.”
Grimes was drafted by the Knicks with the 25th pick of the 2021 NBA Draft. He spent his freshman year at Kansas before transferring to Houston for two seasons, the latter of which ended in the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four, before declaring for the draft early.
In two seasons in New York, Grimes has averaged 9.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. He has shot 38.4 percent from deep on 5.1 attempts per game and 45 percent from the field. Grimes took on the Knicks' primary shooting guard duties in the early stages of last season, replacing the exiled Evan Fournier.
The third-year man was listed as the Knicks’ highest-ceiling prospect over players like Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett in B/R's listing.
“Barrett might have topped out on his talent level, Dakhil claimed. “It also seems the Knicks value Grimes more than Barrett. He reportedly was the one player New York was not willing to part with in a Donovan Mitchell trade.”
Barrett and Grimes are both 23 years old but the former has two more years of NBA experience after being drafted third overall following his freshman season at Duke. After a sophomore season that saw him become the youngest Knick to earn at least 20 points a game, Barrett saw minor dips in nearly every major statistical category.
