Grimes and Chaney played together at Houston during the 2020-21 season after the latter transferred from Arkansas after a two-year tenure with the Razorbacks. In the year Grimes and Chaney played together, the Cougars reached the Final Four for the first time since 1984, when Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler led the program. Houston also won its first tournament title since 2010 and its first overall as a member of the American Athletic Conference.

According to Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle, a cause of death has not been listed for Chaney, but it is suspected that no foul play is involved. Chaney was set to move on from the Houston program after his fifth college season and join AE Psychiko, a professional basketball team in Greece.

In 35 games this past season for the Cougars, Chaney averaged 3.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.7 steals per game, en route to earning the AAC's Sixth Man of the Year. After Houston's loss to Miami in the Sweet 16, Chaney spoke to the bond he had built with his teammates.

“The loss isn’t the biggest thing,” Chaney said via Mike McDaniel of SI. “Not seeing these guys every day, not playing with these guys on the court ever again, not putting the Houston jersey on, that’s what hurts really bad.”
