New York Knicks guard Quentin Grimes was named a member of Team USA's Select Team, The Athletic reported. Grimes, alongside other young, up-and-coming NBA talents, will practice against the main group set to compete in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup, which includes Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart.

Grimes gets the chance to compete against some of the best young talent in the NBA, and will have the opportunity to become a replacement player if the opportunity arises.

Team USA has seen a transition in talent as it seeks to recover from a disappointing visit to the 2019 World Cup, which saw them fail to medal for the first time since 2002. The next wave of young talent is reaching the age where they're taking over representing the country. This round of World Cup play will showcase that talent and it’ll good for Grimes to take the opportunity to establish himself with the defacto practice squad.

Grimes, the Knicks’ first-round pick in 2021, is heading into his third season with high expectations. He finished his sophomore year averaging 11.3 points in 29.9 minutes a game, appearing in the starting five in 66 of his 71 appearances. The 23-year-old showed improvement from his rookie season and should be able to continue building off that on a yearly basis.

The Knicks guard joins other top young names like Cade Cunningham (Detroit), Jalen Green (Houston), and Chet Holmgren (Oklahoma City), among others, as players on the Select Team. This year’s World Cup begins on August 25 in Asia. That date would be the deadline for Grimes to become a replacement player on the main Team USA squad.

Jamahl Mosley of the Orlando Magic is the head coach of the Select Team, and training camp begins early next month.
